Making a Difference in the Walker Basin

The Walker Basin Conservancy’s AmeriCorps program gives AmeriCorps members the opportunity to make an impact that will last longer than their lifetime. AmeriCorps members serve with the Conservancy to accomplish important projects that benefit the Walker Basin and local communities—from the river’s headwaters down to Walker Lake. Through serving, AmeriCorps members receive valuable technical training, professional development, and an education scholarship to help them on their next steps in building a career.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Walker Basin Conservancy’s success and impact depend on learning from each other and the community where we work, live, and recreate. A diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization welcoming to all people is paramount to our team and mission. Our diversity, equity, and inclusion committee will guide organizational progress and identify strategies which recognize diversity as vital to success. These principles chart our path forward as the Conservancy works to restore and maintain Walker Lake, improve area habitat, and provide value to Walker Basin communities.

Past and Present AmeriCorps Members succeed with the Conservancy

Part of the Community

I had never lived in a small town before, and I was nervous about the people I would meet. However, I built a strong bond with the other crew members and the local residents of Yerington were very friendly and interested in what we were doing.

More Than Just Work

I'm a backcountry skier and spent most winter weekends in Tahoe, only an hour and a half away. When I wasn't getting up there, I was hanging out with other AmeriCorps members and going on more local adventures. The trails in Wilson Canyon are great, and the East Walker has exceptional fishing if you drive an hour down towards Bridgeport.
